Description: The Personal History of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, Bradbury & Evans (London), 1850. DESCRIPTION: Octavo (8vo.) 8 3/8 x 5 1/2 inches (206 x 130 mm), 624 pages. First edition in book form, early issue (but not 1st). Illustrated with 38 copper engravings (plates) by Hablot K. Browne ['Phiz']. Custom binding in half black calf with marbled paper over boards with identical matching marbled paper continued into the pastedowns and free endplates. Spine titling stamped in gold and all edges of the text block gilded. Protected with a clear archival Grafix Dura Lar dustwrapper. Additionally, tissue guards made for all of the copper engraved illustrations to prevent future offset. CONDITION: Almost entirely free of the foxing commonly seen with only an occasional spot on a handful of pages. Very light toning at tops of the pages, barely noticeable. Text block firm and square, all external and internal hinges intact. Without ex-libris, writing, etc. Overall, a very clean and pleasing copy. DISCUSSION: There are numerous copies of this for sale as listed on Abebooks and the 1st edition, non-1st issue copies vary wildly in price from $500 to $3,500. Nearly all copies have been rebound and prices will, to some extent, reflect the quality of the rebinding, book and binding condition, etc. My observation (FWIW) is that nearly all copies listing for $1,200 or less are not in collectible condition. The copy offered above has an attractive binding in fine condition with internal contents in strong NF condition as discussed, very clean and bright. A highly collectible copy. Please examine all photos carefully and ask all questions prior to purchase because sale is final.
