Description: This is a RARE* ORIGINAL First Printing poster announcing the showing of the classic Buster Keaton 1926 film THE GENERAL. (Goines # 19) It was shown twice on August 19, 1972 at Berkeley’s Pacific Film Archives. The 4:30pm showing was just THE GENERAL. The 7:30pm showing also screened another, rarely seen, Keaton film COPS. (This 1922 film was Keaton’s only one with No interior scenes. It was shot Entirely on the streets of Los Angeles.) *This original First Printing was an edition of only 200, of which 12 were signed by David. Signed copies went to The Poster in San Francisco. It’s printed on heavy paper stock, in 5 colors and it’s dimensions are 18 X 24 inches. (Information from the website Goines.net) It’s in perfect clean mint condition, never framed, never hung. No pinholes, creases, or tears. Sharp corners. Stored flat in an artist’s portfolio for 52 (!) years. Provenance- this was given to me by David in 1972 at his print studio on Grove Street (now named Martin Luther King Jr. Way.) The connection was through Alice Waters’ legendary Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, CA. David and Alice were close friends, and David was a patron on the very first night of operation, (August 28, 1971,) and So often after. (I helped open this restaurant and worked there from its 1971 opening till 1973.) David went on to design and print a Chez Panisse poster for every anniversary since the opening. The tradition began in 1972. A Unique addition to any cinephile, or graphic arts print collection, or Any art collection in general.
