Description: [DEATH] [CASKETS] 22 Photographs of caskets offered for sale by the Miller Casket Company, with attendant price list, cloth interior sample, and housed in original carrying folder Author: Miller Casket Co Title: [DEATH] [CASKETS] 22 Photographs of caskets offered for sale by the Miller Casket Company, with attendant price list, cloth interior sample, and housed in original carrying folder Publication: Scranton, PA: Miller Casket Company, 1926 Description: 22 black-and-white or sepia photographs, ranging in size from about 6" x 13" to 8" x 14". Each photograph bears detailed writing on the verso describing the model specifications and other details. Photographs are uniformly curled on the sides, and rounded at the corners, but apart from a few minor corner creases, in very good condition overall. Attendant price list (30pp.), has a few pencil corrections (likely done by the company), and a short tear to the front wrap. A lone cloth sample measuring about 8" x 11" and with the label "Steel Doe" is also present (wrinkled, but otherwise well-preserved). The black cloth folder which housed these materials is still present, though appears to be missing a top, which would have had a clasp to close the folder. What remains is mildly edgeworn and soiled, but still presentable. Very good. A fantastic group of professional photographs which show in clear detail the varying caskets offered by this Pennsylvania company. Some images depict the caskets open, with ornate interiors, while others are closed. This sample kit would have been used by a traveling salesman, most likely offering his services to funeral homes and morgues in his territory. A nice group of items, which, when taken altogether, give a sense of the business associated with death in the United States, a touchy subject which was critiqued--really skewered--in good faith and with sharp wit by Jessica Mitford in her book "The American Way of Death," which investigated the sales tactics used by funereal and mortuary services to (as she saw it) extract wealth from grieving families.
