Marvin Everett Hayes (American, 1939-) is a multiple awards winning painter, printmaker and illustrator, well known for his work appearing in Esquire, McCall's, Playboy, Redbook, Reader's Digest, Time, and Good Housekeeping. However, his greatest artistic achievement is widely considered to be "God’s Images," a series of 53 copperplate etchings depicting biblical events and themes. "God's Images. The Bible: A New Vision" is Hayes' 1976 book of etchings with text by poet-novelist James Dickey. The book sold over a hundred thousand copies and was on the New York Times' best seller list for several months. It attracted glowing reviews from the New York Times and The New Yorker. Hayes' work was compared to that of William Blake. The book was featured on the cover of Book Digest. It won the National Bible Committee Award for books, presented by then-president Jimmy Carter. Hayes appeared in interviews on several television shows, including the Today Show and the Dick Cavett Show. In 1985, the Vatican Museums in Rome exhibited the 53 etchings which are now a part of the Vatican collection. And a complete set of the etchings is also held in the Dishman Art Museum’s permanent collection. This is one of those original 1976 etchings. Museums exhibiting Hayes' work include the Metropolitan, Boston, Smithsonian, National Portrait Gallery, Brooklyn, Bibliothèque Nationale and New York Public Library. Artwork by Marvin Hayes is in the collection of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Private collectors include Louis Auchincloss, Jacqueline Onassis, David Rockefeller, Barbara Walters and Anwar Sadat.
