Description: DEMOCRATIC OPINIONS ON SLAVERY! 1776-1863 Title: DEMOCRATIC OPINIONS ON SLAVERY! 1776-1863 Description: Pamphlet. N.p.: N.p., n.d. (circa 1963). This eight-page pamphlet presents the views of many prominent Americans on the subject of slavery, including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, and Alexander Stephens. No author is identified, but Cornell attributes this work to the university's co-founder and first president, Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918). A former New York state senator, White was instrumental in bringing an extensive collection of slavery and abolitionist materials gathered by his close friend, Reverend Samuel Joseph May, to the Cornell Library. White developed an early interest in both fostering and documenting the abolitionist movement and the Civil War. Even before his arrival at Cornell, White used his lectures as a history professor at the University of Michigan to respond to the issues of the war by sharing with his students examples of societies that valued the rights of free men over the shallow benefits of slavery. No outer wraps, as issued. A minor printing error to the last line of the second page resulted in the loss of the final few words in the last sentence: "...us to make them public." Light marginal staining to the front panel; else very good. Uncommon. Very good.
