Description: Original hand signed lithograph by American artist Diana Thorne (1895–1963). Known primarily as an etcher, this is one of the few fine art lithographs drawn by her, it depicts a trio of Siamese cats, their blue eyes produced with hand coloring. The lithograph measures 11 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches and is hand signed in pencil by the artist. It is printed in brown ink on buff colored laid paper. Aside from a bit of spotting and minor handling smudges, it is in excellent condition. Rare item. Diana Thorne (1895–1963) was an American illustrator and printmaker known for her depictions of dogs, cats and the sport of polo. She was born Ann Woursell to a Jewish family in Odessa, Ukraine, although she often stated that she had been born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to parents who were wealthy Canadian ranchers. Thorne studied art at the Imperial Academy in Munich and the Charlottenburg Technical College in Berlin. Settling in New York in 1920, she became a naturalized citizen in 1932. Starting in 1929, Thorne exhibited her work in one-man shows at a number of prominent northeast galleries including Vose and Milch. She was a member of several print societies and clubs, including the Chicago Society of Etchers, National Association of Women Artists, Royal Society of Painters and Sculptors, Boston Arts Club, Philadelphia Art Alliance, and the California Print Makers. Her work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum; the American Museum and Gardens, Bath, England; and the McNay Art Museum.
