Description: Mr. Pickwick's Christmas by Charles Dickens. Hardcover, published in 1906 by Baker & Taylor Company, New York. 150 pages. Measures about 7 3/16” x 9 5/16”. This excerpt from Dickens' Pickwick Papers is illustrated with beautiful plates by George Alfred Williams, several of which are in color. The top edge is gilt; the side and bottom have deckle edges. There are no bookplates, ink names, or pen/pencil notations. There is a separation in the seam next to the half-title page, but the binding remains secure. The frontispiece is mostly separated from the binding, but remains attached at the top. There is heavy foxing to the title page, lighter foxing on the next page, and only occasional foxing for the rest of the book. There a dent on the right side of the front cover, toward the bottom. There is wear to the top of the spine, and minor wear to the bottom of the spine. George Alfred Williams (1875-1932) was an illustrator published in such magazines as Scribner's, Harper's, and St. Nicholas. He was also a well-known painter of small figures and landscapes. Engaged in a large mechanical business from ages seventeen to twenty, Williams spent his spare time in drawing and painting, without formal instruction. Alexander Drake, art editor of the Century Magazine, then encouraged him to give up a business career, and procured a commission to illustrate for St. Nicholas Magazine.
