Description: A very interesting etching, a masterpiece of minimalism by the German Expressionist artist Dietz Edzard (1893-1963) and a rare early example of his work. It is hand signed and dated for 1921 in pencil in the lower right by the artist. There are also notations to the left margin, although I cannot decipher most of what it says, the first word is "probedruck", indicating this print was a proof pulled by the artist. The plate measures 6 3/4 x 5 3/8 inches, sheet size is approx. 12 3/4 x 10 inches. It is printed in black ink on deluxe imitation vellum of an ivory color with no foxing or mat lines and is in pristine condition, ready for matting and framing. Dietz Edzard (1893-1963) was a German painter and printmaker. He studied briefly in Karlsruhe with Wilhelm Trubner and later in Berlin with Max Beckmann. German Expressionism is the prevalent style of his early work, both before and after his experiences in the trenches of WWI, but by the late 1920s, he had already shifted to a vibrant and upbeat French style of Impressionism and had permanently moved to France. In 1929, Edzard's work was included in an exhibition of contemporary painting at the Jeu de Paume Museum in Paris. In 1938, Edzard married Suzanne Eisendieck (1908--1998), a well-regarded artist in her own right who also worked in an impressionistic style. Together, they established careers creating canvases of beautiful women, dancers and flowers. In the United States, Edzard's work is included in the permanent collections of: the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the National Gallery of Art; and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art to name a few.
