Edward Rowe Snow was probably close to a Renaissance man of his time. He was a writer, a columnist, he served in World War 2 where he received an honorable discharge due to injuries he suffered in North Africa. For many years he was also the Flying Santa who delivered Christmas packages by aerial drop to lighthouse keepers and their families. It's one of the stories in this book (see, now you gotta buy it to read the story!) His stories read like a compilation of somewhat interesting newspaper columns. Each story is filled with interesting bits of information about the topic at hand. Have you heard of the Molasses Disaster? Or the Halifax Disaster? Other stories include a few personal anecdotes, plus a lot of shipwrecks, pirates, unknown history, treasure hunting. The list goes on. I found his book easy to read, and somewhat entertaining. This book would make a nice gift for someone who wanted to know about some of the more obscure stories of the New England area, or for someone who likes good maritime tales.
