Description: This is an incredible discovery piece similar to the Period 2 Restrike of BG-311 which was classified as BG-915A based on die state and purity. This example of BG-306 is in the final die state, die state 2. BG-306 began striking in 1854 with a purity of 61% Gold at its core and 76% gold in its plating. When XRF tested this current piece tested as 32.6% Gold, 51.9% Silver, 5.87% Copper, and .34% Iron. This purity is significantly below the lowest metion of purity for any Period 1 piece in the 2nd Edition Breen Gillio Reference Guide. That purity being 55% Gold at the core of BG-105 which began striking in 1854. This piece was struck by Frontier and Deviercy & Co. which began striking pieces in 1853 and continued operations until around 1875. I would estimate this example was struck some time between 1859 and 1864. This is around the time frame the restrikes of BG-311 occurred which is around 1859 to 1860. The BG-311 Restrike BG-915A has sold for $2640 and $9400 when it has come up to major auction. BG-915A is a bit more common than this piece with around 5 to 8 existing. For the BG-306 restrike it is currently the only one known and would serve as the crown jewel of most collections of California Fractional Gold with few pieces rivaling it's significance and rarity.
