GREENE WAS A MAJOR GENERAL IN THE CONTINENTAL ARMY WHO REVERSED THE TIDE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION DURING THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN FROM 1780 TO 1781 In mid-October 1779, the Continental Army, consisting of 13,000 men, encamped for the winter at Jockey Hollow, near Morristown, New Jersey, twenty-five miles west of New York City. They remained encamped there until June 1780. On June 7, the British in New York made an attempt to reach the Continental Army encampment. At Connecticut Farms, NJ, the New Jersey militia, including units commanded by Colonel Silvanus Seely, stalled the British advance. Two weeks later, the British tried again at the Battle of Springfield and Continental forces under General Nathanael Greene and New Jersey militia again turned back a larger British force. These battles were among the last major engagements of the Revolutionary War in the north. THE DOCUMENT WAS HANDWRITTEN AND SIGNED BY JAMES ABEEL, A CAPTAIN IN THE NEW YORK CITY MILITIA WHO SERVED ON GEORGE WASHINGTON’S STAFF AS DEPUTY QUARTERMASTER GENERAL AND NATHANAEL GREENE’S STAFF AS SUPERINTENDENT OF STORES James Abeel (1733-1825) enlisted in the New York City militia as a captain in September 1775. He later served on General George Washington’s staff as a deputy quartermaster general of the Continental Army in the winter of 1776 to 1777. When Nathanael Greene took command of the quartermaster’s department in the summer of 1777, Abeel continued to serve as deputy quartermaster general and worked from his own home in Morristown, NJ. In March 1778, Greene made Abeel superintendent of stores in charge of purchasing camp equipment for the entire army.
