Description: [CHESTER A. ARTHUR] BENJAMIN HARRISON. Autograph endorsement signed by, “B. Harrison, I unite in this,” on a petition recommending, “To his Excellency, Hon. Chester A. Arthur, President of the United States…the appointment of Gen. S.M. Strickler to the position of Surveyor General for the Territory of New Mexico.” Signed by Harrison on the docket side, stamped as having been received by the Department of the Interior on April 3, 1884, contains two pages with docketing on the integral page, measures 13.75 by 8.5 inches, and in very good condition with light soiling and multiple short edge tears. DOCUMENT SIGNED BY BENJAMIN HARRISON AND OVER THREE DOZEN LEADING CITIZENS AND OFFICIALS OF NEW MEXICO WITH CONNECTIONS TO BILLY THE KID TO PRESIDENT CHESTER A. ARTHUR Countersigned by over three dozen leading citizens and officials of New Mexico, including a lengthy endorsement by U.S. Senator Preston B. Plumb just above Harrison’s. Strickler and Plumb both served as Kansas legislators and Civil War officers. Strickler was General of the Kansas militia and Plumb a Lieutenant Colonel of the Kansas Cavalry. HARRISON AND THE PEOPLE OF NEW MEXICO RECOMMEND, “TO HIS EXCELLENCY, HON. CHESTER A. ARTHUR, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES…THE APPOINTMENT OF GEN. S.M. Raff (assistant cashier), Charles Etheridge (real estate insurance agent), Jesse M. Wheelock (real estate insurance agent who later became an architect that designed the first building on the University of New Mexico campus), W.M. Allison (reported on Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett while manager of the Daily Journal), William Dunbar (superintendent of the Gas Company), Gustaves Dyes (engineer of the Waterworks), Charles A. Marriner (California miner and chief engineer for the Arizona Canal, which made Phoenix, AZ habitable), Captain James Lawrence ‘Santiago’ Hubbell (commanded the New Mexican Mounted Volunteers in 1861, a pioneer trader, and U.S. marshal), Pillsbury & Co. (druggist), M.C. Willur (U.S. department collector), P.B. Sherman and E. Armijo (owners of the Armijo House, the leading hotel in Albuquerque, where Pat Garrett met Billy the Kid’s brother, Joseph Antrim, following his death in 1882), Edward Medler (builder), Mandell & Co. (grocery store), Robertson & McDermid (grocery store), Saint & Cleland (grocery store), A.S. Hardcastle (grocery store owner), D.L. Sammis (wholesale commissioner), Dana W. Cobb (agent for the Wells Fargo & Company Express), T.A. Brown (manager of the Western Union Telegraph Company), B.F. Pierce (deputy county clerk), Bullock Sewell (stationer), R.W.D. Bryan (superintendent of the Indian School), John H. Sullivan, and several other illegible people and companies.
