Firenze [Florence]: [Bartolommeo di Libri], 1494. Small quarto (21cm.); contemporary paneled calf crudely rebacked in gilt-tooled calf sometime in the 17th century; [222]pp. (of 224), collated and lacking pictorial title page, otherwise complete. Leather worn along margins with some shallow exposure, panelling partly effaced, textblock a bit finger-soiled and shaken in binding, otherwise a Very Good, albeit imperfect example, enhanced by the presence of occasional contemporary manuscript marginalia, including three manicules.A series of morality tales written in vernacular Italian by the Dominican friar Domenico Cavalca (ca. 1270-1342). A lifelong resident of the Santa Caterina monastery in Pisa, Cavalca worked closely with a number of local religious women's communities and his written works, composed in vernacular Italian, enjoyed a strong female readership during his lifetime and well after it--the copying and dissemination of his works following his death have been largely attributed to the religious women for whom the works were written. Cavalca's oeuvre also had a strong influence on Boccaccio's "Decameron," and this work, the "Pungi lingua" in particular, divided into more than thirty tales of moral and religious consequences, greatly influenced the younger author's framing. However, Boccaccio divorced moral behavior from earthly destiny even more starkly than Cavalca--in Boccaccio's universe an evil man who has never done a good deed in his life can still enjoy an undeservedly sumptuous burial, an event that could never have happened in Cavalca's tales.
