Description: Vintage and rare Chinese “door of hope” doll, circa 1910. Blue clothing & doll in good antique condition. Has aged related dirt marks on clothes. No odors! Cloth/no hands = earliest version Doll is in good preowned vintage condition. No odors, some stains and dirt on costume and face. Silk frogged upper garments, Hand stitched shoes in good condition for antique Hair Ponytail -Queue intact but thinning in two places. Right ear has chipped. History: The Door of Hope Mission was founded in 1901 by American Protestant missionary Cornelia Bonnell. The mission provided shelter for women and children who had escaped the brothels and devoted their lives to helping others. Door of Hope dolls are wooden dolls made by women and girls who were rescued from Shanghai's red light district brothels and found refuge at the Door of Hope Mission in the early 20th century Creation: The girls and women at the mission were taught to sew by making costumes for the dolls.
