Description: Obverse : Face of the Duke of Reichstadt on the left with a star at the base of the neck & legend "MAXIMUS" Reverse : "NON PLUS ULTRA" Diameter : 22 mm or 0,9 inch. Metal: copperIn 1827, a strange and brand new copper coinage appeared in Lille. Along with this coin spread the rumor that it had been minted by one of our metal dealers. Searches made at his home did not bring any compromising results but the people claimed that the effigy represented the Duke of Reichstadt and that there was political propaganda in this affair. The truth was that a merchant from Liege had sold to Mr. M*** for 4,000 francs of these farthings (320,000 coins), which slipped among all the small foreign coins then in circulation. It is therefore in Lille that this so-called currency took currency, despite its Belgian origin. It is a kind of unofficial trust currency in local circulation, a pseudo-liard having circulated alongside the liards and equivalent foreign coins as a means of payment in Lille and its region under Charles X. (from É. VanHende, Numismatique Lilloise ou description des monnaies, medailles, jetons ... (1858), p. 100-101)
