EISENHOWER - TYPED LETTER TWICE SIGNED 06/23/1966 - HFSID 84625 DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER In retirement, he signs a typed letter to friend and former Cabinet member Lewis Strauss, discussing his herd of Angus cattle. Typed Letter Signed: "Ike" and "Love to Alice/D.", 1 page, 7¼x10½. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1966 June 23. To Lewis L. Strauss, Washington, D.C. In full: "I am delighted that Joyce Hall agreed to make the cards for the College as a contribution. I am sure he will appreciate your letter to him about Dr. John H. Lawrence even if his own doctors already know of this particular treatment. The other day Ralph Cordiner and I, together with General Nevins and Mr. Hartley, went over my entire herd carrying along with us pedigrees of every animals (sic) and so on. He was deeply interested and it looked like a satisfactory deal was in the making when he got in contact with his general manager in Florida. Apparently his general manager is convinced that the kind of Angus herd that is developed for producing breeding stock rather than for the market cannot possibly be productive in that continuously warm climate. I promptly told Ralph just to forget the entire matter because my own man, Mr. Hartley himself, had told us that he was so sure this opinion was correct that he did not want to go along with the herd, which Ralph apparently wanted in case the deal went through. In any event I thought you would like to know this. All this was done on a confidential basis and I don't think it will become general knowledge. With warm personal regard, As ever," In 1950, three years before moving to the White House, Dwight and Mamie EISENHOWER purchased a farm in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In their 53 years of married life, the Eisenhower's lived in 33 homes. The farm was the first home they owned together. A working farm, it was a weekend retreat, and served as the temporary White House while President Eisenhower recovered from his first heart attack. He began raising purebred Angus cattle, intent on improving the breed and soon had a prize-winning herd. JOYCE HALL was the founder of Hallmark Cards. The college referred to by Eisenhower was Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls, New York, which was founded in 1961 and closed in 1983. Staple holes at upper blank left.
