Dyson & Son ogee wood molding plane York England 1798-1802 profile modified

Description: You are bidding on one Dyson & Son wood molding plane as pictured. It is marked "DYSON & SON" and with several very faint names all on the front end, and with "16" and a large "EB" and "F WEBSTER" on the back end. Two of the faint names on the front end are in bordered stamps, and one looks like "R K.....". The iron is not marked.Overall length of the body is about 9-7/16". The last picture shows the back end of the plane (not the front) sitting on graph paper with 1/4" squares. Benjamin Dyson made planes in York, England, beginning in 1772, including a brief partnership as Middleton & Dyson. His son John Dyson joined him in 1798 and they operated as Dyson & Son from 1798 to 1802. John Dyson then made planes under his own name off and on from 1802 until 1840. Please see the book Goodman's British Planemakers 4th Edition for more information about them.The plane features the fairly wide chamfers and nearly round finial. The profile has undoubtedly been modified. The layout lines don't begin to line up, and the fence is quite short.Condition is otherwise good to very good, especially for a plane well over 200 years old. There are a variety of scratches and dings in the wood, two empty screw holes in the left side, six empty nail holes in the fence section on the lower left of the sole, and some pitting on the iron. The plane is reasonably straight if you sight down the profile. The wedge appears to be original to the plane, and the iron although modified may also be the original. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it's not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20" long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30" long, because those longer packages won't fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, eBay requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including eBay.
