Brain FOLEY Footed 8-Sided CUP & Scalloped SAUCER decorated with GOLD GRAPE LEAVES and HAND PAINTED PURPLE GRAPES and on IVORY, w/GOLD trim, Circa 1948-1963 from Fenton, Staffordshire, England DESCRIPTION: This superb quality decorative cup & saucer has wide gold garland of grape leaves that have hand painted purple grapes. This is on the ivory background on the bone china. This is really striking. There is gold trim on the rims, foot and handle of the cup. The pattern is on the saucer and outside of the cup. The pattern number is V2737. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, it is in superb condition. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the vivid colors and no crazing. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, hairlines, scratches, rubbing or repairs to this stunning set. Refer to the photos to assess the condition for yourself. DIMENSIONS: The deep saucer has a diameter of 5 1/4" and a height of 3/4". The 8-sided cup has a height of 2 5/8" with a diameter of 3 3/8" and a capacity of 6 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: Robinson & Son formed Foley China Works in Longton, Staffordshire, UK in 1881, subsequently Elijah Brain became a partner. In 1903, the company became E. Brain & Co., Ltd. with Elijah and his son William Henry Brain continuing to use Foley China as a tradename. The company used the Foley China name in Fenton, England for 60 years until 1963 after having purchased Coalport in 1958 and deciding in 1963 to use the better known Coalport tradename. Family control of the business ceased in July, 1967 when Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, Ltd. purchased it. The EB Foley (E. Brain & Co. Ltd) mark on the bottom of these is from Geoffrey A. Godden's Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks as mark #544. This mark was used in the 1948-1963 time period. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
