Description: Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Martha Beard - c.1830. Though undated, there is a plaque on the back of the frame which tells us that Martha was - Born 1816 in Lyme Handley, Disley - which would suggest this piece was worked c.1830 or slightly earlier. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with a central butterfly with a rose and tree to the left and right and the following verse beneath When sweet summer flowers appear we wish that they always would lastBut winter must shortly be here to sweep them away with a blastSpring, Summer and Autumn still hasten away, the roses must fade and the blossoms decayLike winter old age will be found all stripped of our blossoms and fruitWe still may remain in the ground though nothing be left but the rootAnd wither'd and bare we must ever remain For Spring will not cover our branches again The lower section of the linen is stitched with a large three storey red house with side annexes which have a flower nearby. Martha's name is contained within the linen below the house with a flower basket to each side, then the whole piece is surrounded by a double acorn border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly paler around the edges and darker to the field from where the sampler has been over a stretcher at some point of time. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is minor bleeding to the first four lines of the verse. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original rosewood frame with gilt slip, both of which are in good condition. The slip retains much of its original gilding whilst the frame has scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and a couple of small old losses to the outside edges. I also want to mention that since taking the photographs, the glass broke which I have had replaced with old glass. BUT when I put the sampler back in the frame I unintentionally put it in upside down! As such, the frame is the other way round from how it looks in the photos. Measures 14 1/4" across x 14 3/4" (sight size) and 17 3/4" x 18" including the frame. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING. I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE POSTAGE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES. PLEASE NOTE - THIS ITEM IS LOCATED IN THE UK BUT CAN BE SHIPPED TO THE LOCATIONS TICKED IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING SECTION. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! SHIPPING WILL BE VIA PARCELFORCE - FULLY TRACKED DELIVERY TO THE USA WITHIN FIVE WORKING DAYS.PLEASE NOTE - I WILL DOUBLE TAPE THE GLASS & PACK THE SAMPLER EXTREMELY WELL, BUT DUE TO ITS SIZE I CANNOT GUARANTEE AGAINST THE POSSIBILITY OF THE GLASS BEING DAMAGED DURING TRANSIT. IF THE BUYER WOULD PREFER FOR IT TO BE REMOVED, I AM HAPPY TO DO SO.
