Description: Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Ann Gough aged 16 - 183*. The date is contained within the upper right quadrant of the sampler but the last digit is missing, seemingly never added by Mary Ann, but the style of stitch work would suggest a latter 1830's date. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with five rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern with six months at the beginning of the penultimate row followed by the words - God Save The King - and the date of 183*. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central flower bowl with a church, birds and floral motifs to the left and floral motifs, birds and a charming image of a man on a horse to the right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket with a bird above who has a dog to his left and a man standing to his right. The contents of the fruit basket have a bird, dog, stag, bird on a tree, floral motif, floral urn and standing figure to the left and a bird, floral motifs and a standing figure to the right. Mary Ann's details, those of her school - Brookhampton School - and the date of January 29th run across the bottom edge of the linen underlined with a Greek key border whilst the top and bottom edges are stitched with a blue line border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler around the edges and darker to the field from where the sampler has been over a stretcher at some point of time. There is also an area of damage above the church and one is able to see through this that the sampler is sitting on a similar coloured backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within an early 20th century gilt effect frame which is in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. Measures 17 1/4" x 17 1/4" (sight size) and 18 3/4" x 18 3/4" including the frame. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING. I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE POSTAGE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES. PLEASE NOTE - THIS ITEM IS LOCATED IN THE UK BUT CAN BE SHIPPED TO THE LOCATIONS TICKED IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING SECTION. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! SHIPPING WILL BE VIA PARCELFORCE - FULLY TRACKED DELIVERY TO THE USA WITHIN FIVE WORKING DAYS.PLEASE NOTE - I WILL DOUBLE TAPE THE GLASS & PACK THE SAMPLER EXTREMELY WELL, BUT DUE TO ITS SIZE I CANNOT GUARANTEE AGAINST THE POSSIBILITY OF THE GLASS BEING DAMAGED DURING TRANSIT. IF THE BUYER WOULD PREFER FOR IT TO BE REMOVED, I AM HAPPY TO DO SO.
