Description: For your consideration, a vintage barber bottle in deep amethyst or nearly "black" glass. Manganese was added to remove the green tint given by iron and in higher concentrations gives glass this deep purple color. Manganese is one of the oldest glass additives, and purple manganese glass was used since early Egyptian history. This piece is not that old, however, as it dates from 1885-1925. It was mouth-blown and retains the rough cut pontil mark. The cork spout has been lost. It has been decorated with white and gold enameling and stands 7 3/4 inches tall. It is in perfect condition with no chips or cracks--just rubbing to some of the gold gilt and enameling. Unknown maker, but we suspect it is American--likely West Virginia or Pennsylvania.
