Description: This is an early Tsuba with dragons watching over the earth. I have been looking through the extensive collection of Tsuba from the Met, which are pictured on line. This type of cast tsuba were scarce, but the few I could find seemed fairly early. I cut and pasted the heading from one of the ones that is in the Met collection. Note that I do not know how old this one is, so look at my pictures. A heading of a tsuba in the Met Museum collection: Sword Guard (Tsuba) Japanese early 17th century I turned up a collection of old Tsuba samurai sword guards. They came as a forgotten group of a Japanese sword collector, and was missed in the liquidation of his estate 20 years ago.
