Description: Early Staffordshire Reading Maid This early Obediah Sherratt Table top figure features a young girl reading. Significant damage documented below. In the early 1800s, improvements in the supply of reading material resulted in the growth of the reading public. Homes displaying earthenware figures of people absorbed in books proclaimed the family's status as educated members of Society. Approx 11.5"H X 5"W. Documentation: Schkolne Staffordshire Figures, Volume 1, p, 87, fig 25.5 Condition: Really dirty which is an easy fix, break and repair to book/hands/fingers, broken bocage, hairline to bottom, break and repair to middle of tree. Please refer to photo for further damage that I may have missed documenting. This is a great early piece with significant damage but a really neat piece of history. I will be listing a large Collection of Staffordshire, many pieces deaccessioned from a Museum so please continue watching. Terms of Sale Please review photos closely.
