Description: Ed Lee Natay Original Painting Gouache Navajo Man On Horseback "Man on Horseback" Natay OriginalArtist: Ed Lee Natay Life: 1913-1966Tribe: NavajoPainting Size: 18" x 13" (W x H)Frame: 27" x 23"Paint Type: Gouache Ed Lee Natay is a Navajo artist from Standing Rock New Mexico. He was a schoolteacher in Santa Fe, a painter, decorative metal artist, and more famously, a recording artist. His metal work can be found in the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe. Around 1936, he married Pop Chalee who was a member of the Taos tribe, who went on to become quite a famous artist in her own right. Together, the couple were hired as artists and good-will ambassadors for the Santa Fe Railway. In early 1950, they embarked on a publicity tour for MGM's Annie Get Your Gun, visiting more than twenty southern and eastern states. Pop Charlee and Natay then returned to Arizona, where they would meet Ray and Mary Boley, who were looking for a Navajo singer whose voice could be used for background music for a stage play. That meeting produced the critically acclaimed album, Natay - Navajo Singer, and helped launch Canyon Records. Natay's artistic technique is the "flat-style" minimalism that was taught at the Santa Fe Indian School, in the 1930's, under Dorthy Dunn's tutelage. Natay was not a particularly prolific painter, and only limited examples of his work exists. Old handmade frame is in great condition for it's age. The glass has a crack in the bottom right as shown in the photos. If you have any question about this painting or would like more pictures feel free to message me anytime!
