[7 blank] [Second Speech] Description: A bound volume of what are considered to be the two most important speeches made by Edmund Burke, a member of the British Parliament, in the late 18th century. The first speech is a third edition printing about American taxation given on April 19, 1774, and the second is about conciliation with the Colonies, given on March 22, 1775. Edmund Burke was an Anglo-Irish statesman who served as a member of the British Parliament between 1766 and 1794 with the Whig Party. Burke criticised the actions of the British government towards the American colonies, including its taxation policies, and also supported the rights of the colonists to resist metropolitan authority. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, his work was widely regarded, especially in the U.S., where he became known as the philosophical founder of conservatism. (from Wikipedia). Condition: Very good condition. Sound and square, half calf binding, with marbled paper covering the boards. Some wear to the spine ends. Rubbed along the edges. A few scuffs to lower board. Previous bookseller's notations in pencil on the front endpapers. Endpapers are tanned. Lacks the title page and any other preliminaries for the second speech. The inside pages have toning and some foxing, with the pages being rippled. Previous owner's name on the title page. The bottom fore-corners are rounded and they and the bottom edges have occasional light soil or damage. One page has a tiny margin hole. Eighteen or so pages in the second speech have some neat pencil underlining. Shipping: Packaged weight will be under 1 kilograms (approximately 600 grams packaged). Mailed from Canada.
