Initially a stage performer, she entered films in 1931, and is best remembered as the mother in the original version of Hitchcock's "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1934). Among her other films were "Intermezzo" (1939) with Ingrid Bergman & Leslie Howard, "Swiss Family Robinson" (1940) with Thomas Mitchell & Freddie Bartholomew and "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (1947) with Gene Tierney & Rex Harrison.
