Description: This Edward IV Groat (fourpence) was minted in Bristol, denoted by the letter B on the King's chest. The Bristol Mint was reinstated after 1464, meaning this coin is 'light coinage'. Quatrefoils on the neck help identify it, see Spink catalogue no. 2004. A further mint mark that would have appeared above the King's head is not visible on the reverse. There is a sun symbol visible (we would need two symbols to narrow down the years of issue). The coin weighs 2.521g. King Edward IV Plantagenet, House of York Edward IVs coinage was the first to introduce an advanced system of symbols on the coinage. This developed into a sophisticated system by the Tudor and Stuart periods. From 1464-5, the weights of the coinage were reduced to combat the migration of English coins abroad, where they could be sold as bullion for profit. The reduction of the silver penny was from 15 grains (0.97g) to 12 grains (0.78g). The issues on either side of this date are referred to as heavy coinage and light coinage. Whilst the general 15th century trend was for fewer English mints, London was the main producer supplemented with ecclesiastical privilege mints in York and Durham. Under Edward IV, several mints were either reinstated or created. Consequently, we have Coventry, Bristol, Norwich, Canterbury, and Durhammints. Edward IVs coinage is further divided into first and second reign. In 1469, Edward faced rebellion, and after a short break, minting resumed with the so-called second reign coinage. These second reign coins established a consistent use of an initial mark at the start of the inscription. This provides a chronological series of 18 marks from 1471 to 1483. This silver groat was minted in Bristol during the first reign of King Edward IV of Great Britain, which lasted from 1461 to 1470. The coin features a hammered design and has a fineness of 0.925. With its historical significance and beautiful craftsmanship, this groat is a must-have for any serious coin collector. It is a valuable addition to any collection and a testament to the rich history of Great Britain.
