LEGROS' portrait of his friend, the distinguished English painter and M. lecturer, touches the highest point which has been reached by contemporary French etching, in its efforts to graft certain modern notions upon the antique style of engraving pursued by the old German and Italian masters. In it local color has been but little attended to, the drawing and modelling are as fine and as accurate as possible, without the expenditure of much more time and labor; truthfulness of expression has been most conscientiously sought after; but in the use of nearly parallel lines, so crowded as to make a tint that approaches in softness to mezzotint, the modern feeling is betrayed. There is also evident sort of sneaking regard, if it is allowable to say so, for whatever vanity about his personal appearance Mr. Poynter may (not without excuse) indulge Schongauer or Mantegna would not have touched in the darks about the nose and the prominent check-bone so tenderly. But, for our time, it is a remarkably sincere and faithful drawing, and we cannot quarrel with it for its delicateness, for by means of it some important facts of character and expression are conveyed. What it is particularly desirable to point out in this as in several of those etchings is the painter-like quality so different from anything that the ancients aimed at, and so unmistakably present in work of our time, even when, as in the present case, it is obviously based on the style of some one or other of the old masters.
