Description: This is a good quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Egg Cup. The cup has a stepped circular base, a short pedestal stem and line decoration around the top rim. The name E.G. Holt is engraved in the Old English style on the front. The egg cup was made by Jay, Richard Attenborough & Co and assayed in Chester in 1903. Richard Attenborough & Co were retail and manufacturing silversmiths in London’s Oxford Street with a history dating back to 1797. The business was acquired by James Charles Jay in 1887 and renamed Jay, Richard Attenborough & Co. They sold both new and antique pieces through their store and remained in business up until around 1960. Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny ding low down on the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs as these form part of the description. The egg cup stands 6.8cm / 2.7ins high and is 4.8cm / 1.9ins in diameter across the top rim. It weighs in at a very respectable 51.7g / 1.82oz of solid Sterling Silver. The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are slightly rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter C for 1903 and the J J makers' mark for James Jay of Jay, Richard Attenborough & Co.
