This kit also includes complete interior details including bunks, lockers, and a stove Kit Scale Dimensions: 13.3” long, 4.0” wide and 3.8” high Logging companies throughout the era of railroad logging commonly used camp bunk houses like the one presented in this kit. A portable logging camp typically consisted of rail-mounted camp cars and bunkhouses (also known as skid shacks), as well as other structures such as the mess hall, office, machine shop, and saw filer’s shack. When the headquarters camp was too far from the worksite to transport men conveniently, the logging company would order the construction of a logging camp. Bunkhouses and other buildings were made portable by placing them on flat cars or disconnected log cars and were set up alongside a mainline or spur. As camps and crew grew larger, camp cars were specially built or converted from used railroad cars, and permanently mounted on car trucks. The bunkhouse in this kit was used by the St. Paul & Tacoma Logging Company from 1920 to 1970. Unique features distinguish this bunkhouse from most others. These structures had milled, vertical siding rather than the horizontal siding used in the vast majority of camp cars. They were shipped from the mill as a “kit” and assembled at the camp. Moreover, the sled under the camp car itself was not as heavy as some of the others. Most camp structures built on sleds had heavier logs having a much greater snipe (bevel) on the ends because loggers used donkey engines to pull cars off and on flat cars and disconnects. However, St. Paul & Tacoma used cranes and large cable loops to lift the camp cars off and onto flat cars.
