A master of woodcut, linocut, mezzotint, scratch board and lithography, he works in the tradition of the Taller de Grafica Popular, but with a modern sensibility and contemporary take on the customs, politics, and people of Mexico. Santamaria has won awards in Mexico, Belgium, and Sweden for his work. His solo exhibitions include galleries and museums in Mexico, the United States, Japan, Poland and Russia and he has traveled to many of these countries as an artist in residence. While exhibiting and teaching at Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire, he executed a large mural with the help of students. In 2017, he completed a mural at Duke University and his first monograph "Graphic in Transit" was published in 2021. His book illustrations cover a wide range of subjects and as an inveterate book lover, Sergio has made the creation of personal ex-libris both a commercial endeavor and a passion.
