Le tableau est peint avec tellement de virtuosit et tellement dardeur que la jeune fille parat vivante, ce qui frappe le narrateur. Aprs avoir pass plus dune heure contempler le tableau, lhomme lit lanalyse de ce portrait dans le recueil. Le reste de la nouvelle est un extrait de ce volume qui raconte lhistoire du tableau. La jeune fille tait une personne dune rare beaut qui pousa un peintre. Le peintre tait passionn par son art, ce qui la rendit malheureuse. Un jour, le peintre dcida de faire un portrait delle, ce quelle nosa refuser.
