Autograph Letter signed: "Elisha Boudinot", 1 page, 6½x8. New Ark [Newark, New Jersey], 1797 March 31.To "Dear Sir", in full: "I have settled with Mr. Street for one share of half agreeable to your letter. Mr. Hardy will settle for the other half share. As our Supreme Court begins its next session at Trenton I shall be engaged a fortnight. After that will be over and settle the Seneca lands. In the meantime shall I beg the favor of you to sell my shares in the German company if in your power - as I wish to get clear of debt and business I do not understand. You will oblige me if you will effect a sale and relieve my mind. I wish you had given me your opinion relative to Col. [?]. I have delayed answering the letter til I heard from you, and if you could let me have a letter by tomorrow's post I could receive it before I leave home - also what you think of the Carolina lands. I am Dear Sir your most obedient servant". Elisha Boudinot (1749-1819) descended from a French Huguenot family who fled religious persecution first to England, and then to America in the 1680s. He was a Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1798 to 1804. He also served as president of Newark's first bank, and as a trustee of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton). His brother, Elias Boudinot, was President of the Continental Congress and the second US President under the Articles of Confederation. Multiple mailing folds. Toned and creased.
