The dark green glossy leaves are evergreen, elliptic, leathery, wavy-margined and are 1 to 3 inches long with large spiny teeth. Greenish-white flowers appear in May. Flowers are fragrant but generally inconspicuous. Pollinated flowers give way to berry-like red (less frequently orange or yellow) drupes, 1/4 inch diameter, which ripen in fall and persist into winter. Birds are attracted to the fruit, though they are not edible to humans. Plants of this species are dioecious (separate male and female plants). Female plants need a male pollinator in the area in order to bear fruit. Aquifolium comes from Latin words for needle (acus) and leaf (folium) in reference to the spiny leaves. English Holly is a beautifully shaped tree, with a symmetrical, dense, wide pyramidal form. The spiny, dull green leaves are accented with clusters of red berries which persist throughout the fall and winter. Male and female flowers appear on separate trees and trees of both sexes must be located in the same neighborhood to ensure production of berries on the female plants.
