I believe this to be the true first edition due to publishing date (1886) being printed on title page below publisher info. I’ve seen other (red boards) copies with date on copyright page but not on title page. I can’t find info in regards to how the publisher identified first editions, but a date on title page has been a common way to do so for many publishers. Moderate wear to covers including staining, scuffing and wear around the edges. Corners bumped and frayed/chipping. Spine has some missing bits. Hinges cracked and binding is split in several gutters. Fep nearly completely torn at gutter. Some dog eared pages and blemishes around page edges. Tanning pages. See photos for condition.
