Description: Etching After Jacques Callot ST. MATTHEW from Les Grands Apotres Debout, after 1631 This is a quite highly skilled 17th century etched copy after the Callot print so it dates a bit after the 1631 date of Callot's original. Callot was an exceptionally popular printmaker in the 17th century and copyright laws, being not at all what they are today, his work was widely copied (including the signiture) and sold as by Callot. The etching is printed on what appears to be typical 17th century laid paper The differences between this copy and an original are quite difficult to see but if you look very closely, you will find very slight changes in the lines here and there.
