ETCHING Hand Signed ~ GERMAN EXPRESSIONIST ~ c1910s Two Color FELSING PRINTED

Description: A very interesting circa 1910 two color etching by German Expressionist graphic artist, Fritz Lederer (1878-1949). It is hand signed in pencil by the artist, as well as signed in pencil by the great Berlin printer, Otto Felsing (he was printer for Edvard Munch and Kathe Kollwitz). The plate measures approx. 8 x 6 inches, sheet size is approx. 15 x 11 inches and it is printed in black and rust on cream colored wove paper. It is in excellent condition with mild overall paper toning, does not look to have ever been framed or matted. Fritz (Bedrich) Lederer (born 22. April 1878 in Königsberg an der Eger, Austria-Hungary; died 19. May 1949 in Cheb, Czechoslovakia) was a landscape painter, etcher and woodcut artist. After studying in Weimar and Paris, he settled in Berlin were he became a well regarded member of the Berlin Secession, the Deutscher Künstlerbund, and the Freie Secession. A Jewish artist, he fled Germany in 1938 to escape persecution by the Nazi regime. Unfortunately, he relocated to Prague, and was eventually imprisoned at the Theresienstadt concentration camp, though he survived and continued his art career. He is well known for his series of etchings of scenes at the Theresienstadt camp published shortly before his death.
