Description: Old, hand-carved Ethiopian Coptic Christian hand cross. Heavy wood -- possibly oak. Carved on all surfaces -- front, back, and sides. Purchased in 1973 from a curio shop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Still a bit curio-shop dusty. One-of-a-kind carvings of religious images on both sides. The main theme on one side is St. George killing the dragon: "Fair girl" he said, "do not be afraid for I will save you life with the aid of my Lord Jesus Christ". See pictures. I think that's the fair girl to St. George's right. 21.5 inches tall; 9.5 inches wide, and variably 5/8 to nearly 1 inch thick. Brown. Could be used as a wall hanging without harm to the carvings. Cross can rest on two small nails placed in your wall, spaced the same distance apart as the two lower notches under the dragon's tail and head, so you can flip sides in an instant.
