Michael Ward was one of the initiators of the 1951 Everest Reconnaissance, in which Edmund Hillary participated. The two were members of the successful 1953 Everest expedition, Ward as doctor. Charles Clarke was doctor on the 1975 Everest expedition, when Doug Scott and Dougal Haston became the first Britons to climb Everest.
