Description: Maker: Both pieces in this beautiful and ornate cup and saucer or sauce boat set have the blue underglaze mark of the Carl Thieme company, which produced exquisite porcelain works beginning with the founding of the Saxon Porcelain Manufactory in Potschappel, Germany, in 1872. The company is widely recognized as one of the great Dresden manufacturers. The company went into receivership in 1972 and re-emerged as the Saxonia Porcelain Manufactory Dresden. Mark and age: The blue back stamp on this set - with the word "original" above the Potschappel mark - came into use around 1960. Source: Dresden Porcelain Studios by Jim and Susan Harran. Design: Richly decorated with gold and fuchsia scrollwork, the presence of a spout confirms that the set was intended to be a small sauce boat with its under plate. But some consider it a cup and saucer and it would make a wonderful addition to any cup and saucer collection. The intricate handle on the ornately decorated gold lined cup has the grace of a swan, a common feature in German porcelain design. On the cup's front is the stylized face of a lion with the surrounding cartouche representing the lion's mane - it becomes apparent when the cup is turned over. On the saucer are two gold shields and intertwined stylized fuchsia flowers and gold vines. Size: The saucer is 5 5/8 inches long, 4 5/8 inches wide and about 1 1/8 inches tall. The cup is 2 3/4 inches wide at the center, 4 inches tall at the top of the handle and about 5 1/8 inches long between the tip of the spout and the far end of the handle. Together they weigh 8.8 ounces. Condition: The set is in overall excellent condition with no marks, nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, stains, discoloration, crazing, repairs or wear. The gold is entirely intact. There is a small section of missing paint on the base of the cup - it's shown in the photo with the red arrow.
