His brilliant roles were: Karl Moor, William Tell, Wallenstein, Macbeth, King Lear and others. In his time he was one of the most important German actors. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1819 to 1825 and was trained in lithography. Hanfstaengl enjoyed great popularity as a portrait lithographer of Munich society, which earned him the nickname Graf Litho.
