Description: This is a rare and very well done Antique Old California Plein Air Desert Landscape Oil Painting on artist board, by seldomly seen early California Impressionist painter, Millburn Porter. This work depicts an expansive desert landscape scene, with California Fan Palm trees stoically standing out across the plain. In the distance, several mountain peaks can be seen. Signed: "Millburn Porter" in the lower left corner. Additionally, this work is signed and annotated on the verso: "Millburn Porter 3472 Farnham Place, Riverside." This painting likely dates to the 1940's - 1950's. Approximately 28 1/2 x 34 1/2 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 24 x 30 inches. Good condition for age, with a few spots of light scuffing and paint loss to the canvas, and minor edge wear to the original period gilded frame (please see photos.) Acquired in Southern Texas, United States. Porter's rare works are seldomly seen on the market, and this is probably her finest landscape painting known. About the Artist: PORTER, MILLBURN --- Millburn Porter lived near Riverside, California and had a studio out of her ranch style home. She was known to have been an art teacher and had a Monday painting class from her studio in the late 1960s. Millburn Porter adapted her name to sound male in order to compete with the painters of that time. One of her former students stated that "she changed her name to that of a man so her paintings would be considered seriously". A talented artist, Millburn Porter painted California landscape, desert paintings, and floral subject matter. Californian artist Millburn Porter who painted under the tutelage of Bennett Schroeder Bradbury. It is alleged that Millburn is actually a woman who changed her name to that of a man so her art would be taken more seriously.
