First Day Issue Stamp Endangered Species Wyoming Toad Brown Pelican California

Description: First Day Issue Stamp Endangered Species Wyoming Toad Brown Pelican California Condor Cache Envelope Enclosure San Diego Zoo 32¢ San Diego CA Oct 2 1996 Endangered Species Wyoming Toad Brown Pelican California Condor In our efforts to keep our cachets reasonably priced and affordable to a wider range of buyers we have begun grouping large setenant issues ma combo format that requires fewer cachets, and keep with our nearly two decade promise of featuring every stamp issued by the US. Postal Service (USPS) on a cover. When this is done, as in this case of a setenant of 15, we still try to feature artwork that compliments all the design different stamps. I hope our efforts are appreciated, for it certainly makes for a great deal of extra detailed labor on our part in the hand painting process. In cases where we use original pen and ink sketches as the base art for our covers the original art is almost always at least twice the size of what winds up as the finished product as printed on the envelopes That art is then reduced by a photographic process giving much greater detail that would have been possible otherwise But when we begin painting the smaller, more detailed art we discover that it takes much more time. And in the case of cachets where we still have art for each stamp we find we spend more than three times the labor that would have been required had we not reduced the art work so much. to get three on one caver. Therefore each cover is more expensive (and not only because there are 96-cents in postage. as opposed to only 32-cents) They are just much more labor intensive. Wyoming toad - Toads are generally a small animal with powerful back legs enabling them to jump They make up the toad family. Bufonidae, and are not frogs There are about 200 species of toads but almost ten times as many different species of frogs. Toads have shorter legs and are generally more clumsy than frogs and range in size from 1 to 9 inches in length, with most ranging from 2 to 5 inches. They grow up in water but spend most of their lives (no more than one or two years) on land. The Wyoming toad, like most others, have rough warts on their skin and a poisonous liquid in their skin (mostly in bumps just behind the eves) Toads exude the poison when attacked and the attacking animal becomes ill, or may even die, if it so much as touches the toad. Brown pelican - (PEHL ih kur, There are two major types of pelicans in North America and they are either White or Brown. The huge elastic pouch on the pelican's bill can hold about 12 quarts of water, but they do not store food in this pouch as many believe, but use it as a scoop to catch small fish which are then swallowed. They feed their young by passing partly digested food from the stomach back into the pouch and the baby puts its head deep into the pouch to eat. Unlike the White pelican, the Brown pelican fishes by diving beneath the surface of the water. Brown pelicans factually pinkish in this area of Texas) have decreased greatly in number since the 1940s, when pesticides in the bodies of fish they ate affected the birds' eggs with thinner shells, making them difficult to survive to hatching. California condor While still endangered the success of environmentalists in saving this, the largest bird on the continent, has been quite successful. There was once less than 40 known to exist. They reach a length of 45 to 55 inches and have a wingspread of up to 10 feet and weigh from 20 to 25 pounds. Like other vultures, the condor feeds chiefly on the bodies of dead animals and usually nest in caves high on cliffs. The female lays one egg on the bare floor of the cave and this egg measures about 4.5 inches in length and about 2.5 inches wide, but large enough to hold more than a half pint of liquid. Condors do not breed until they are six years old and lay an egg only once very two years. They became rare mostly because large animal carcass became scarce and due to their limited reproduction rate. Killing them now brings very harsh penalties and/or fines.
