DETAILS ABOUT THE ARTIST Often referred to as an "outsider artist", Daniel Johnston was a prolific, self-taught musician who began home-recording albums on cassette in 1980, gaining a cult following for his unpolished and vulnerable sound. Plagued by mental illness, he suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, as reflected in the unrestrained nature of his creative output. As a visual artist, Johnston drew compulsively with whatever was at hand, often using a ballpoint pen or coloured marker on printer paper, giving his works a naΓ―ve and improvisational quality. Many of his drawings were used as album art, including the recurring character "Jeremiah the Innocent Frog", featured on the cover of his 1983 album Hi, How Are You. Johnston gained further cult status when Kurt Cobain famously wore a Hi, How Are You album t-shirt on several occasions, including at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.Daniel Johnston released 17 albums over the course of his life and his artwork has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Zurich, Berlin, and at the Whitney Biennial in New York. He was also the subject of the award-winning documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston (Sony, 2005).
