Gummed tape can also be used to cover old labels and markings to minimize confusing shipping companies. Gummed tape will flex with a carton during shipping and handling. Gummed tape is also the best method to seal a carton that is over stuffed or under packed.When compared with plastic tapes, gummed tape only requires one strip on the top and bottom flaps. Standard plastic tape is only 2" wide and packers will generally use two or more strips on each the top and bottom flaps causing a doubling of the cost of labor, and an increase in overall tape expenditures.Plastic tape is affected by dust, temperature, and time. Dust particles will cause the adhesive on the tape to become ineffective. Extreme cold and/or hot temperatures will cause the tape to deteriorate and sometimes fall off the carton. With time, some PVC tapes will actually dry out and cause the top layer of the tape to separate from the adhesives. Gummed Tape is Recyclable!!!Interested in conducting your own test? Try taking a standard type hair dryer. Aim it at the pressure sensitive tape. Once the tape is warmed a little, it will peal right off the carton.
