Rómulo Aguerre: He was born in Montevideo on May 30, 1919. From a young age he studied drawing and painting with his uncle Ricardo Aguerre. In 1936 he became part of the staff of the newspaper "El Plata" as a photography apprentice. In 1970 he opened an Art Gallery in Punta del Este, Maldonado. Towards the 1950s and 1960s, without abandoning his studio work, he began sustained research and experimentation in the area of ​​abstract photography. In 1953 he exhibited for the first time in a collective exhibition, within the framework of the V Photographic Salon of Montevideo. In the course of his life he received various recognitions: in 1954 the first prize for International Photography at the São Paulo Biennial; acquisition award in the National Salons of 1969, 1972, 1980, 1982 and 1983 and the first prize in the XVI Municipal Salon of Plastic Arts in 1978; in 1972 he was selected by the French Alliance as "The best of the year", among other distinctions. In 1970, in parallel with his activities as a freelance photographer, he joined the Department of Artistic Conservation of the Legislative Palace, obtaining the position of chief photographer. In that position he worked in a stable manner, except during some of the years included in the dictatorial period, until his retirement. He died in Montevideo in November 2002. Rómulo Aguerre: Nació en Montevideo el 30 de mayo de 1919. Desde joven cursó estudios de dibujo y pintura con su tío Ricardo Aguerre. En 1936 pasó a formar parte del staff del diario "El Plata" como aprendiz de fotografía. En 1970 inauguró una Galería de Arte en Punta del Este, Maldonado. Hacia la década de 1950 y 1960, sin abandonar el trabajo de su estudio, inició una sostenida investigación y experimentación en el área de la fotografía abstracta. En 1953 expuso por primera vez en una muestra de carácter colectivo, en el marco del V Salón de Fotografías de Montevideo. En el transcurso de su vida recibió diversos reconocimientos: en 1954 el primer premio de Fotografía Internacional en la Bienal de San Pablo; premio adquisición en los Salones Nacionales de 1969, 1972, 1980, 1982 y 1983 y el primer premio en el XVI Salón Municipal de Artes Plásticas en 1978; en 1972 es seleccionado por la Alianza Francesa como "Lo mejor del año", entre otras distinciones. En 1970, en paralelo con sus actividades como fotógrafo independiente, ingresó al Departamento de Conservación Artística del Palacio Legislativo, obteniendo el cargo de fotógrafo jefe. En ese puesto se desempeñó de forma estable, excepto durante algunos de los años comprendidos en el período dictatorial, hasta su jubilación. Murió en Montevideo, en noviembre de 2002.
