Description: France 1775: King Louis Pardons Army Deserters, Fascinating Edicts pre-Revolution This is a fascinating volume in French, containing a collection of royal edicts of King Louis XVI, all of them dealing with the state of the French army. Topics treated by royal edict range widely, from the approved way for a soldier to remove his hat, to the pay grades of officers posted at various military outposts all over France, to the establishment of military academies, to (my favorite, and the suject of the first Edict) what to do with soldiers who have disobeyed/deserted/betrayed the army and the King. Since in 1775 we are only a few years from the French Revolution of 1789, we can easily imagine a degree of unrest and defiance in the military, as there was in French society and large. So as we read this series of proclamations, we get the impression of seeing part of French history unfold before our eyes! There are, I believe, a dozen edicts contained in this volume, from four to 48 pages each, each printed in Metz, bound together in a single book in duodecimo (small) format. Publication dates are 1775 and 1776, just as our own Revolution was being undertaken. The pages are clean and easy to read. The leather binding has some issues but remains sturdy, and some parts of the spine have retaind their gilding. There is even a bound-in leather bookmark. This is a rare book. I see another exemplar (or a very similar compilation) of this book offered by a French dealer on Bookfinder for $340. This desirable copy is offered here on eBay at a much lower price point. I hope it finds a good new home! And, ahem, it's a fine GIFT idea for someone who loves French history, or military history. Shipping within the U.S. will be $10.
