Lagrasse Among the heritage treasures hidden in Châlons-en-Champagne is a nugget: one of the last eight hard-wall circuses in France, inaugurated on 16 April 1899. This magnificent dodecan (12 sides) reinforced concrete building, due to the local architect Louis Gillet, crossed the beginning of the 20th century by hosting passing circuses, famous troops, but also many concerts or galas. He has sometimes turned away from his primary vocation, serving for example as a camouflage workshop (World War I), a place for storage and the depot of gas masks (Second World War) or a cinema (from 1919). In the 1950s, the place was rented to sports associations, artists performed there and its home even took the place of dancing. The establishment of the National Centre for the Circus Arts (CNAC) in 1985 will definitely seal the strength of the link between Châlons and the circus. The reputation of this school of higher education in the Circassian arts now transcends our borders. Students come from all over the world to follow a high-level course, integrating, in addition to the equestrian arts, staging, directing, contemporary dance, music, singing, general culture, introduction to administration and communication. The carved portal of the main facade of the building, with its horses coming out of the pediment, its clown heads on either side of the front door, evokes the traditional universe of the circus. A world of emotions and creativity that, in this school of excellence that is the CNAC, has evolved in its expression, making Châlons-en-Champagne the cradle of the contemporary circus. With the Furies festival, the Pôle national des arts du cirque, the future project of a museum dedicated to the circus, the city continues to enrich the practice of the Circassian arts.
