Description: Francois Gerome (French, B. 1895), Impressionist Oil on Canvas Signed and Titled Lower Right. Canvas 12” x 16”, Framed 24” x 30”. Reference Hislip. Purchased in France on 9/10/1991 for $1,200. Francois Gerome was a French painter born in Paris in 1895, and was a contemporary of Edouard Leon Cortes (1882 – 1969). He is most recognized for his paintings of well-known Parisian cafes, bistros, famous monuments as well as the beautiful people who visited these lively, picturesque places. Locations such as the Moulin Rouge, the Paris Opera House and Café de la Paix were extremely popular places during the Belle Époque era and in the mid 20th Century. Gerome’s warm palette and masterful play of color capture the essence of the romantic atmosphere of vintage Paris, France. Gerome specialized in oil, watercolor and pastel and chose both boards and canvases for his working surfaces. Francois Gerome’s paintings can be found in private, institutional and corporate collections in the United States and throughout Europe.
