Gold, Frankincense and myrrh were gifts worthy of being given to the King of kings and Lord of lords. Each vial comes in a small gift box, and approximately 24” of satin ribbon. Make a short loop for Christmas tree hanging. Use extra ribbon to make a little bow for the neck of the bottle if you wish. Bottle is glass. Keep it away from small children. Use care if wearing as a piece of jewelry. Each vial contains a sample of frankincense resin (from Ethiopia), myrrh resin (from India), and gold leaf (from China). The three gifts had a spiritual meaning: gold as a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense as a symbol of deity, and myrrh as a symbol of death. The Gospel of Matthew (2:1–12) speaks of Magi, or wise men, who followed a star from the East to Bethlehem in search of a newborn king. There they found Mary and the baby Jesus and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Why was frankincense and myrrh given to Jesus? Each of these precious gifts has a symbolic meaning. Frankincense was used for worship in the Temple; it is symbolic of Christ the High Priest. Gold is symbolic of Christ the King. Myrrh a perfume, was used to anoint dead bodies, it is symbolic of His death for the sake of truth, and therefore of Christ the Prophet. Finally, frankincense and myrrh are often blessed at the Mass of the Feast of the Epiphany to commemorate the visitation of the Biblical Magi to the Baby Jesus.
